You won't get the lighting results from the first image with the 1 light soft box set up posted by ok. There's no fill on him either.
My guess is the model is at least 6-8 feet or more from the background. He's lit by a single light with probably just a little bit of diffusion on it and the light is a decent distance away from the model and up sorta high angled down and far from the right. The light is hitting him and is lighting the background but because of the angle you don't see his shadow and because the background is far enough away it's a couple stops darker than the model.Just a guess though.
