search functionality done quite nice, but site is unable to use when you have flash-block installed in FF

not seen this before either. i like it. the 'text in wrapped boxes' thing is as old as the hills but the site is definite improvement.

lol all flash, fucking shit all that could have been done with HTML apart from the needless text resizing on the left nav that doesn't even look like a nav.
The fact it was developed using flash shows the incompetence of the creators
oh yeah and how about making your on demand shit actually watchable for everyone
- typical developer comment to make.WeLoveNoise
- nope just a designer who actually understands their medium********
- I'd count myself as that fiesta, but you sound a bit evangelistic, embracing it too hardkelpie

most of it could have been done in javascript yes, though I'm actually yet to see a front end done in this way which is as smooth as one done in flash. I agree on the up side of doing things this way, but for something like that, what happens if they don't have javascript, seeing as the argument is always "what if they don't have flash".
I'm concerned at the vehemence of the objection to it though, I hardly ever get that worked up about interactive frameworks and websites.
I also reckon the nav on the left is a hugely important part of the site, seeing as its directly reflective of the C4 on-air branding, and branding is a big concern at C4.

"though I'm actually yet to see a front end done in this way which is as smooth as one done in flash"
gucci.com
apple.com
luigibormioli.com
youlove.usall these are smoother and flashier than the ch4 homepage
- I disagree on gucci certainly, I think its way glitchier and less well eased. impressive use but would be smoother from an animation view in flashkelpie
- animation point of view in flashkelpie
- much as I love jquery et al and respect/admire the intentions at achieving this stuff with DHTML...kelpie
- ...from an animation stand point I can't help seeing a drop off, also I find the types of interaction show their necessary limitations too oftenkelpie

If you flash-basher sometimes go just a little beyond the "it's all flash" surface you may notice that the HTML is all there.
"So why did they use flash??? "
Because as kelpie pointed it's smoother and less tricky than doing it in javascript/jquery.
That flash is reading the HTML source of the page as XML and rendering it visually better, while preserving the accessibility.
This solution has been around for like 2 years, so come out of your cave and enjoy the sunlight.

Why is their homepage centered and all of subpage aligned left?
