Just generally speaking, I am interested to hear why companies would be interested in turning to digital in times of recession because of the better ROI and easier tracking of where your money goes - click through rates on banner ads, conversion on websites etc...

They are interested because of analytics. It's cold hard data. It's not user groups or samples sizes and complex forumulas. There's no hocus pocus involved.
We have a client who spends around 10 grand a month through google on search and another 5 grand on EDMs.They see direct profit from these because each click can be tracked... On the EDM side they make about 300% ROI. Which is pretty fucking awesome yeah?
