Funny how many of the designs I respond to in that list are also the ones that utterly break every Golden Rule of logomanship.

Agreed. A few there that are shit or generic. but 1 or 2 nice ones.

Avocado Man sounds like a superhero that needs to happen. "Fear not for I am... AVOCADO MAN!!"

I hate the trend of making a logo that in fact is an illustration (or a pseudo-minimalistic crap that simply doesn't work on so many levels) with bad type treatment, put it in online galleries and wait for it being gathered by the "50 inspirational ..." posts makers. As a rule of thumb, 98% of such posts are crappy logos from other crappy "50 best ..." posts, 1 or 2 are ok.
There are no exceptions to this rule.

Several of these are quasi-RIPS.

I hate this kind of thing. And that goes for $50 logo companies, and pretty much anyone who thinks that a logo on its own is a piece of design as an end unto itself.
Branding is about your experience and perception of a company and a logo almost never exists in isolation. Great brands stem from an idea not a logo. They are mainly recognised by a look and feel, again not a logo. The example I always give is Orange. You can tell their ads a mile off from their approach and the distinctive orange helv on a black backround. You almost don't even need the logo on there:
their logo when judged on its own would probably be seen as boring if it was in a crit on one of those sites:
But that's not what makes a brand. So who cares what someones favourite 50 logos are. They mean nothing on their own.

Honestly the only one I think is even half decent is the 'LOOK' one

Most of them are shite, clever for the sake of it.
