Hi qbn community,
Have been working at this job that I thoroughly enjoy for near on 8 months.
I was promised a pay review at 9 months (I'm currently receiving below market rate salary). The boss announced 3 months ago that there would be no pay rises for the next 6 months stating the global financial crisis as the reason.
As my rent has gone up and other expenses are piling up, I can't really afford to live on this wage. What is the best way to ask for a pay rise and the best way to approach it in general?
Many thanks.

best way to get more pay. get a new job.
- or if you get a new one, at least you can tell your old one. that you found a new one which pays more. so...akrokdesign
- either they raise your or you have to take that new job. :-)akrokdesign
- this is the correct answer********

Very difficult to find another job with this economical climate though, and I really like the people I work with. I am comfortable here, just the $ is near on shite, and if I could get a pay rise without threatening to leave or looking for another job that would be ideal.
- either you have to freelance after work. and get some extra $$$.akrokdesign

easy, talk to your boss.

But I'm sure people here have asked for pay rises in an effective way without taking on more work?
Thanks for your advice though

Make a PowerPoint presentation for your boss. Schedule a one hour meeting with him. Show how your pay is below market rate, and how his "policy" of no pay raises doesn't eliminate the realities of your situation. Talk about possible alternatives, like you working less for the same pay if he's entirely inflexible.

Asking people here was your first mistake. I did the same exact thing, and got preempted two months later. I hope for your sake that your boss is unlike mine, and doesn't snoop around trying to find out what their employees are doing on QBN.

- Thing is, I didn't even say anything bad about the firm—just that I need to make more money.Scotch_Roman
- They took it personally that I came here for advice rather than directly to them.Scotch_Roman
- seems a might odd i'd say (sounds like a mole at work)version3
- No, it's a long story though. Boss already knew I hung around here when work was slow.Scotch_Roman

Ask you boss if the salary freeze affects your previous agreement for the review and increase. You are in a different situation, you were started below pay and expected the salary adjustment.
On the other hand, based on the bad economy he will tell you that you can't have the review. You should really keep a low profile and fell lucky you have a job.

In my experience, the only successful way to get a raise is to qualify yourself. If you're an asset (brought in new business or offer unique solutions to existing clients), than it should be an easy process.
It definitely helps to have an out - another job offer - to bargain with. Also, you can present industry documentation on current salaries. I would use those as a last resort tho.
None of this seems relevant considering the economy right now. Good luck.
