I wanted to start doing some 3D in flash and wondering if I should start learning the native support in flash or is really Papervision more powerful engine to use.

both? CS4's native 3d is not that much more complicated than adding a Z plane to what you already know. much simpler than PV depending on the needs of the project.
- thats what i do, in illustrator, add a z-axis... its simple... for me at least...e-pill
- extrude?
elaborate (Illustrator) pleasemonospaced

3d via flash requires outputting to player 10... papervision is available via player 8... bigspaceship did some tests... looks like papervision comes out on top:

what irks me is that some components, etc. made for Flash/Flex aren't made internally.. ie. especially Flex... a Flash Tile component is like 28k... something like that.. people on my team have rewritten the damn thing down to 3k.

papervision comes out on top when the scenes are very complex. the native stuff is much faster for simpler calculations and has more responsive interactivity.
well i imagine the PV people will refactor things to take advantage of the new matrix calculations FP10 uses to make it faster, but then it will require FP10...

I'd have to say I'd rather stab myself than code 3D as opposed to doing it with a GUI.

If you are starting up and just testing out 3D I can recommend the java based language/environment; processing . Works for web, but as applets. Check out processing.org.
Example: www.inv.no, small demo app done in less than 150 lines of code.
