I'm starting to think I didn't chose the right profession.

You can cut down your living cost and adjust the location with room-mate.
For $1000, you can get a room (still tiny) in nice parts of Manhattan (ex west village).
And you can rent an artist studio (only for work shared) in Brooklyn for $500 to off set the lack of work space.

Also, when I say tiny studio in "ok" area of manhattan, I mean 350-450 sqf studio but really depends on where you want to be. Gramercy and Murray Hill is decent and livable with cheaper rent. Lower East or East Village can be cheap but really gotta fight for it with the hipsters. Or even Upper West / East side below 90th st, Chelsea or Financial district are ok.
Do not live in anything above 90th, hell's kitchen (Clinton) and Midtown west or parts of east.
- You really gotta dig for a place in NY.********
- LES cheap? Maybe 5 years ago.marchelo
- i lived on e 91st in a 1 bedroom. it was a good location (near 4, 5, 6) and affordable.johndiggity

like mentioned before it all depends on what your needs are and what type of lifestyle you are used to but... JSK got it right with his comments, although, how things are now with the economy you're starting to see some better deals for rent. I'm looking for a new place myself right now.
Pesonally, I live in Astoria, cheap, quite, and i pass four grocery stores on my way to the subway. Plus it only takes me a half hour to get to union square. If you're flexible in your search you'll find whatever you're looking for.
- i lived in astoria 10 years its just as close to manhattan as anything..e-pill

350 K in Manhattan = 157 K in Salt Lake City according to CNN money cost of living calculator.
223% more expensive to live there. I would say SLC is an average city to live in expense wise.

I live in a decent location in manhattan with a pretty decent spacious studio. If I had to, I can probably get by with $80k. But I wouldn't call it comfortable.
Living comfortably means very differently depending who you talk to. I personally feel that saving 20-30% of my income is a must. I want to take a couple of nice vacations every year and go out to eat/drink occasionally without having have to worry about my money. I don't want to owe any on my credit cards.
If you think too much about the finance and cost of living, NYC really doesn't make sense but it's the experience that matters.

It really depends on your apt costs. There are a few deals out there if you find older roomates with controlled rent due to them being there since the 70's. Chances are that you will have roomates anyways and avg $1200 towards just rent alone. Can you say Bedstuy? I'd suggest looking into certain Myrtle areas in BK that are gentrifying. Don't bother with east village or Bedford. Do your groceries local, look around. It's hard to do anything in NYC if you dot have a stepping stone for at least about a month or so. If you can find someone that knows the area, your chances improve by like 60%

And for the most part, salaries are adjusted to match the cost of living in NYC. The position I hold in NYC pays more than it does the same position in a different city/state. You'll see.
