A designer I knew had a theory about how to create design that people liked: "Stay one step safely behind cutting edge." What do you think, is this dumb or was he onto something?

Hmm. Reminds me of something provocative Chuck Barris once said in an interview. Something along the lines of, "The key isn't to be ahead of your time. You have to be one step back, doing the popular thing at the right time."

Just sounds like a bunch of abstract cool sound words to me, I think in practice and reality its substance-less drivel.

That's way to broad.
I know for a fact the government market needs you to be about 4 steps back for them to feel cutting edge.

People don't know what they like.

suppose its about giving the public time enough to start looking at the cutting edge as "the popular/safe" and not as the vanguard/trendy
