When you activate built-in flash or use an external flash gun, why does the shutter speed refuse to go any faster than 1/200?
Using a D90 and have the same problem with built-in flash and with external SB-600.
Have disabled Auto FP which allows faster shutter speeds but with massive detrimental effects on the light, totally screws the flash up.
What the hell is this all about????
And actually I do think this is an issue for all cameras, not just Nikons.

Can't get a clear answer to this online

Yeah, the Flash can only sync up to a certain shutter speed - in your case 1/200. A basic limitation of the technology.
It's technical, but here you go: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/…

hmm not sure if there's an easy solution other that geting a diffuser to soften the light.. you could even put some paper under it to dull it a bit. I actually stuff toilet paper into the front of my sb600, and point it away, using just the lit up paper as the flash. it's a bit trial-and-error but it gets results. especially if you take the flash off the camera and set built-in to commander mode on low

No no, I had this the other day on my D90, there is a setting where you can change it, god, it's called auto FP or something, it can go up to 2500. Switch auto FP on and you should be able to change it.

oh... ha I didn't read your question properly! You've already swtiched on FP. How does it screw the flash up? I used it the other day and it was fine.
