your finder is not reading your notebook, but your computer is (if that makes any sense)

Your HD (not your Mac) is listed under Devices in both examples. The only difference I see is that one is Column View and the other is Icon View.

yeah mac is sorted now, finally! I think this is maybe to do with backing up from a time machine back up of my last mac - not sure how to delete the extra bits though

look under 'devices' in the second image

horton I see, so the browser finder always lists it all regardless of settings? Ive never noticed this before though

if you click on them, they go to different places you know. the hd one shows the root of your hd, the comp one shows everything mounted on your comp!

if you want it to all look the same, change your finder prefs/ sidebar... your computer will show up as a device, i promise.

yeah I know, I wondered whether theres a way of not showing the compiter on the browser finder. Just have never noticed it before, pretty unimportant though

untick the 'Computer' tickbox in Finder Preferences
see also Help > Mac Help > About the Finder... etc

It's normal. The reason behind this is because of the nature of usage. Standard finder usage is usually going to be manipulating files that are within your user directory (home folder). People who aren't that savvy tend to go to places they really have no business, and fooling with permissions/deleting files (system folder). When you're attaching a file to an email, you aren't opening that file and manipulating, thus, no fouling up your system. Think of it as a security blanket.
