"I've been fascinated by what might be called the geological nature of harddrives – how certain mineral arrangements of metal and ferromagnetism result in our technological ability to store memories, save information, and leave previous versions of the present behind....perhaps someday we won't actually need harddrives at all: we'll simply use geology itself. In other words, what if we could manipulate the earth's own magnetic field and thus program data into the natural energy curtains of the planet? The earth would become a kind of spherical harddrive, with information stored in those moving webs of magnetic energy that both surround and penetrate its surface."

what if all of this has ever since been happening and we didn't discover the method to read it yet?
- locustsloth0
What if we ARE reading it and it appears to us in the forms of intuition, ghosts, and psychic abilities?

- THanks! i think you're super toolocustsloth
- i see what you did there

Presumably we'd need to shut down the molten iron convection systems at the core of the planet to prevent subsequent overwrites and data corruption.

I've always thought it'd be funny if, in a thousand years time, we discover some hyper-logical form of geometric communication, and we see that the form and structure of the stars in the heavens isn't in fact random, but a coherent structure spelling out a big "Zargon The Hipostule was 'ere" across infinity.

- oh yeah.
er.. exactly.Nairn - i've actually thought of that too. well the part where the stars are not random at all.sea_sea

I lack the requisite knowledge to contribute even a pithy witticism to this thread. Good luck my finely brained friends.
- harlequino0
Just imagine how much wittier it will be to pull a floppy disk out of your work bag and quip "Hey fellas, we can back up to this!" Will defnitely make zinger of the week list.

that's a ghost theory, apparently areas with more iron ore in their geology have more activity

This is a cool idea, but storing information magnetically is actually quickly becoming obsolete and has major limitations. But this is very similar to what they are now almost able to do on the molecular level by manipulating DNA with radio waves. Crazy stuff.
It is a mind opener on what can be used as a medium to store data.
