I want to get something to protect the surface of my wooden desk but not one of those calendar deals, something with zazz. Any suggestions?

Anyway, what has glass got to do with projecting on his desk? I think he means a projector, as in the kind that project an image. He wasn't using a farty word to say "I want to put something on the surface of my desk to cover it physically"

STEP 1:
Lightly sand wood with a very fine sandpaper or steel wool.STEP 2:
Apply a water based clear lacquer on the desk. Available in satin, semi, or high gloss finish.

You know how wood is soft and if you write too hard on it and the impression of your handwriting shows up in the wood? I want to prevent that from happening.

if it's straight up unfinished wood you can do a nice sanding, up to 300 or 400, apply a coat of schelac (the kind in a can, not your pants), allow to dry, then do a light sand with 400 or good steel wool (fine). Repeat process to darken the look. Ends up nice and natural looking without a gloss or sheen to it.
