I made the move and certainly am thankful that I did. It can get a little boring being at home on your own all day but to be honest I'd much much rather being doing this than working in an office.
DO IT!

Although I agree with socket, it's probably not the best time to be quitting your secure job and going out into the world of work hunting right now

yeh do it - it's surprising at what rate you can a) Learn stuff when left to your own devices, and b) Actually crank stuff out when you don't have to explain everything you do to someone else or a group of people, sit and gossip, or discuss future ideas of how to implement things with people that are on the whole wrong about most things.
- liveforever0
i know its a better rate but after u declared ur earnings - i dont think u actually end up that much better than if u had a fulltime job

It can be quite stressful at times. You don't have any guarantees. It also comes with the freedom to say no to things, and do things your own way, which is good when it works out. :)

It has it's pluses and minuses, ups and down. You can make a lot of money but end up having to work a lot. You can work at home or wherever you want. You can wear whatever you want if you work off site. You don't have to listen to a boss, you're responsible for yourself. Networking is important. Your reputation is important. Make sure you save your loot. Don't go cheapo on office equipment. Get a nice office chair and dual monitors. You have to buy your own software now, Adobe Master Collection ain't cheap either, especially when they upgrade every frickin year. Charge what you're worth and stick to it no matter what. If you're okaaay at what you do, charge average rates. If you suck at what you do, do it for cheap or for free and learn more as you go. If you're great at what you do, charge a good amount but not too much, don't get greedy. Learn customer service if you've never had to do that before. Be professional at all times, even when the producer has their head up their arse. Read the dictionary and get a better vocabulary, speaking well goes a long way. Never burn bridges, no matter what. Everyone knows someone who knows someone who knows you.
