i don't think it's big of a deal as you're making it out to be. if you do freelance work you should expect to provide them with that type of information.
they're required by law to report wages and the only way they can do it is with your SSN
if anything you should feel more comfortable you're doing work for a company with legitimate business practices

step 1- Go register yourself as a DBA if youre going to continue to do freelance work. Get a bank account under the DBA.
step 2- Get a Tax ID number. This will be used in place of a social security.This will not help you in this case but hopefully for next year.

If you think about it, it's not your number, but the govt's number for you. Seeing that this is a gov't form, why the big deal?

the big deal is, that this is my first job with them. I've never meet them in person - yes its a government form - but I'm not giving it too Obama - im giving it too the people who hired me, and who knows what they do with their records, or who will see it.
