Ok, so i took this job that i should have just passed on. Good work but their not paying enough. Now they want me to fill out a w9 - the potential for my socialSec# to be misused is more a factor than the measly money ill make on this invoice.
any suggestions on how i can say i dont want to fill out a w9 w/o looking like im trying to dodge taxes, or have something else shady going on. - or am i just being paranoid

Your paranoid about putting your ssn on a government form?

step 1- Go register yourself as a DBA if youre going to continue to do freelance work. Get a bank account under the DBA.
step 2- Get a Tax ID number. This will be used in place of a social security. This will not help you in this case but hopefully for next year.

If you think about it, it's not your number, but the govt's number for you. Seeing that this is a gov't form, why the big deal?

the big deal is, that this is my first job with them. I've never meet them in person - yes its a government form - but I'm not giving it too Obama - im giving it too the people who hired me, and who knows what they do with their records, or who will see it.

i don't think it's big of a deal as you're making it out to be. if you do freelance work you should expect to provide them with that type of information.
they're required by law to report wages and the only way they can do it is with your SSN
if anything you should feel more comfortable you're doing work for a company with legitimate business practices
