I have one of these with a goldring cartridge. Not direct drive, but if you're not DJ'ing or anything, get a belt drive.

if i were going to spend ridiculous sums on a turntable, i'd get that one that reads the record with a laser. apparently it can bring new life to recordings because it can read parts of the groove that the needle never touched.

Numark TT's are the most cost effective and best decks you can get... fuck what it looks like ya big girl. Plus you can get a USB plugin as well

Get 2nd hand Technics. Built like a tank, and the best sound quality deck you can get for the price. If you want an alternative to Technics then Vestax is a much better option than Numark - they look sh!t though.
I'd also question why you want direct drive if you're not going to be djing/scratching etc. My fave deck in terms of sound quality was an old Thorens - belt drive but an amazing sound.
