I'm going to be a heathen here, and not talking about sit down ambience or niceties or any of that. But I have to confess, as much as it grates me... but Pret a Manger do really nice Latté's.
In other news, there is a great old school coffee bean shop on Delancey Street in Camden.

Mickey's Diner in Minneapolis (actually it's in Saint Paul, but if you don't live here you wouldn't know anyway) but not the one downtown, the one on W 7th by Snelling. The thing they make it in is so shitty, but it makes an amazing cup.
