I had no idea you could do that with CSS. The fading is not so important to be honest.
And I did google it but I figured I'd get some human insight on the topic, from people who've probably executed it before. Google is great but you can come across a lot of shit that is too complex for what you're looking for :)

yeah with css tooltips you can roll it out no problem then you can jazz it up with a bit of jquery.
shouldn't take very long and its good to learn.

Tool tips are fairly simple to do with CSS, but if want them to fade in and out, look to JQuery. Maybe Janne can enlighten you.
