My wife's got herself a new laptop. I've forgotten what I knew about PCs but remember using spybot and AVG. These now seem to be chargeable. Can any PC users recommend free antivirus software?

AVG, NOD32, Avast

AVG has a free version.

Ah yes, perhaps it was spybot she said you needed to pay to delete the things it found! So is AVG the way to go?

yes thats the one, you can use it free and it finds stuff, but to remove it you have to register and pay

No, it's free. Completely free. I have it installed. There are a few rather nasty apps out there that have hijacked the name and either install spyware or don't do anything.

we just used it and it found a few things and said 'delete files' or something. We clicked 'yes' and it said you must register to do that, x£ ...

works like a charm. if you have something nasty, run it in safe mode.
i use that in conjunction with spybot search and destroy with the tea timer (rounce's link)

While AVG is good - it's not the best. My Dad's pc got all kinds of viruses and malware on it that AVG didn't spot.
Whilst fixing it, I was trawling a lot of security forums and Avira was always touted as the best of the free antivirus.

Also checkout Malwarebytes for a good fixer.
