For research purposes, or some classical inspiration, I suggest you try some digital libraries. Most of them have large hundreds of available books in display, and thousands of book-plates and illustrations. There's always some sort surprise when you dig around old books:
http://www.canadiana.org (awesome digital library)
http://www.europeana.org
http://purl.pt (awesome digital library too, if you know your way around Portuguese)There's also a major US digital library - but I can't seem to find the link in my bookmarks right now.
