connonball is right :p multitasking is a huge part of it - and short term memory... plus stamina in putting up with drunk people. However, I guess these only apply at night clubs and night life bars - if you're looking to work at a martini club, golf club house... something ritzier, there will be more knowledge about drinks needed, less volume coming through

Don't go to bartending school. Waste of money. I did it 10 years ago.
1) Can you pour drinks? How well? Can you multitask?
2) Are you a hot chick?
3) Does the bar need help? These 3 factors get you the job. Since you're a smarmy dude you might be better off entering as a barback, unless of course you don't mind working in a dive.

do NOT go to bartending school - everyone I ever worked for wouldn't hire people who talked about graduating from bartending school because they're normally not good, went without ever working restaurant/bar industry, and only know how to make drinks one way.
I would work your way up - memorize basic drink recipes and the most common shots from your regional area. Different types of places need different types of bartenders -- what are you looking to do?

Two common tracks:
a) degree from bartending school
b) work your way up from cocktail waitress
