are your green?
recycling? biking, walking, or using public transit? conscious of daily energy consumption?
- armsbottomer0
or are you green rather

I don't drive a car, but I have to say I go replace laptops every 2/3 years and I have owned more than 3 cellphones in only 5 years. so not green enough I guess
- pango0
i'll start biking again when the god damn snow melts!!
mean while, public transit and free rides from friends.

i smoke greens...

i don't drive a car anymore. and i am planning to look more to greener solutions in design if possible. thinner stock, eco friendly hosting etc. etc.
i just watched this documentary, it is so incredibly intense and positive and factual(!) that i am all feeling so good right now:
http://www.vpro.nl/programma/teg… (mostly dutch though.., but vital parts in english)more on that & videolinks here:
http://www.vpro.nl/programma/teg…the end of oil is nigher than ever.
solar power development is going at an insane pace at this moment. really, seriously insane.
read this:
http://www.swissinfo.org/eng/fro…imagine floating islands creating gigawatts of energy and at the same time, in that same process, create almost infinite amounts of cheap fresh desalinated water, to drench the thirst of millions of people in need.
- i do drive one every now and then, but i don't own one anymore. and feel less like it every day..janne76

Public transport, I pay a premium to our power company to use more alternative energy sources. Swapped out all of the old bulbs in the house to the compact flourescents. Replace the furnace filter frequently, just insulated the attic.
Ways that I am bad is that I still smoke cigarettes, which seems stupid to mention but it is a pollutant.
Also, I use propane heat to heat the garage when i am out there in the winter. Although I insulated the garage last week too.
I recycle all aluminum cans (which is a lot!) I have a real pet peeve about wasting things, I try to use everything.

The question shouldn't be "are you green?"... It should be "what are you doing to be more green?"... Once you realize that a person or a business can never be 100% green, it takes the anxiety out of it and lets you focus on the changes that mean the most to you. The more you learn, the more you want to do, and the more exciting it is. One of the biggest misconceptions about 'being green' is that it's some kind of sacrifice. It's really just about living a healthier, happier life and protecting nature so that we can all enjoy it.
As a designer, one of my biggest concerns is consumption. It's crazy how we drool over new products all the time (iPhone, etc) and are constantly looking to make the next purchase. If we really appreciate the design of something, then it should last and make us happy for a long time.
I watched this video a year ago and haven't stopped thinking about it since...
http://storyofstuff.com/TreeHugger is great daily reading...
http://www.treehugger.com/- Treehugger used to be great, but it is completely overwhelming with the 200+ articles it posts some days.calcium

The book is good too.calcium - Yeah, TH posts too much, but it's really easy to skim headlines. WC is great too, for more in-depth articles.joeth

I haven't owned a car for a few years, and don't use much power, except for the computer to view QBN.

You people are idiots. There should be a clear definition of 'Green' given before any intelligible argument can be made on the subject at all --unless armsbottomer is using a conventional definition of 'green' (which is clearly not the case). Otherwise, a discussion is occurring around a nebulous concept of newly created term. That's it. You are all idiots.
- I think you should fuck yourself.DrBombay
- what is nebulous about polluting less?DrBombay
- I can't work out what styleplus has added to the discussion. Whatever, it was neither useful nor enjoyable.Nairn
- styleplus makes no sense and is offensive and not funny. he's a surplus. a waste to the environment.janne76

How are we idiots I see people discussing specific ways that they are limiting their influence on the environment and helping to stop pollution. Maybe you are an idiot for not reading the thread.

While I agree that there needs to be a clear definition of "green" I also think you are being rather condescending. Obviously, "living green" is where one is making strides to living an environmentally and socially concious lifestyle.
My girlfriend and I are very invested in making sure our lifestyle has minimal impact on the environment. She's actually going back to school now for Environmental Science and Policy, so I know things are about to get even more intense at our house.
We grow some of our own food, use recycled products on whatever we can (including our carpet material), and unplug devices not in use. This is aside from all the things mentioned already.

DrBombay, I hope you waited until the old bulbs were dead before swapping them.
Too many people just buy new CFL bulbs because they last longer and draw less energy and throw out the old ones. But in reality it is good to make sure those bulbs receive their ultimate end of life process before being discarded, if not for the waste stream then for the production and transportation of said product.

Story of stuff is great... We're defined by what we consume right now, and that's pretty sad... I mean, the idea that we are judged by our credit scores for jobs... i don't like it.
We got rid of a car, and I take mass transit...will soon bike, hopefully. And, recycling, using less electricity... using less... we don't need as much money, food, devices, etc, as advertising would want us to believe.
- Meeklo0
but then again, being green is now a "type of consumer" and its being exploited to the full extent.
From the "recyclable bags" they sell you at whole foods, to the new "green macs" to the example calcium mentioned before about people not waiting for bulbs to die before replacing it.
- Gifto0
I think this is a really subjective thing - I know people who claim to be green (usual recycling etc) yet holiday abroad lots, have more than one car and have weekend activities than involve lots of driving about...
I recycle a lot of stuff and walk most places within reason but wouldn't really consider myself green....
- likewise. being green is as impossible as being perfect. but every effort counts

well, the main problem is caused by "consumism" but commercials don't tell you that, they say. This laptop is green, BUY IT NOW.
oh by the way the new iPhone is out, get rid of the other one and buy this one, is faster.
