I have a zipcar account. I love it.
The only problem is that I've only had my license for about a month, and their fine print says you must have had it for at least a year. I'm not sure how I qualified for an account, but I think it's great!!!

dunno if its the same thing but in Montreal iam with Communauto. There's like 300 places around the city where i can pick up a car when i need it (and when available, need to reserve). It cost me like 100$ and i do all i need to do with a car. They even pay the gas and the insurances. Something like 1200 to 2000$ per year to have access to a car compare to 6000 to 9000$ per year to own a car is a good move to me. If it fits with your lifestyle.

Akrokdesign, I think Zipcar actually bought the other one...flexcar?
I love it. $50/year plus rental. I gave up my car a few months ago (in DC) and the metro and Zipcar make for a perfectly acceptable, waaay cheaper substitute.
The formula changes if you have a kid or don't live with easy access to public trans, but if you think it'd work, I gently encourage people to try one month without their cars. Many who try it find they love not worrying...

at least in SF, zipcar has varying monthly fees which changes what you pay per hour. if you rent frequently it makes more sense to pay the higher monthly and then get the lower per-hour rate.

zipcar is fantastic. have nothing but good things to say using it in sf.
