As a little kid I used to be a big fan of surfwear, OceanPacific, Billabong, Quicksilver, Town&Country, HangLoose, etc... So used to try to draw down new logos, or come up with a new brand. I was about 12 or 13 and I had no idea that was graphic design, I was not artistic at all, I didn't like drawing, I just liked creating the logos.

I dabbled fairly successfully in graphic design for 5 years after graduating with a degree for it >Then ran the fuck away from it telling others along the way whom were considering it as a "career path" not to. If only I had listened to them AIGA speaker' half-hearted jokes about not doing it.

Two degrees in architecture later I discovered a career that would allow me to have my own business, pays fairly well (or at least there's the chance of moving up, unlike architecture), is super easy/less time intensive (compared to architecture) and you can make pretty things to decorate your home!
What really got me interested was working on presentations. If you saw some of the best competition entries they'd be some of the best examples of graphic design out there.
My thesis adviser, Thom Mayne of Morphosis also has some stunning books. I'd highly recommend checking out this one in particular (came out while I was in grad school):

It was a beautiful bridge from the ink-on-mylar collages, chipboard models covered with stucco and explored the possibilities of 3D, illustrator and Ps, at the very beginning.

My great-grandfather, grandfather and uncle were all political cartoonists. I wasn't as gifted as they were. So Graphic Design was a way for me to be creative AND get paid.

adults always asked me as a little kid what i wanted to be when i grew up and i didn't know so i said "mad scientist". after they crushed my dreams by telling me i couldn't, i changed my answer to "graphic artist", barely knowing what one was.
i pirated photoshop when i was 15, entered school without a cent in my pocket at 20, and came out with a degree and a job making posters.
now i'm taking a break from it and am being a mad scientist.
