To me, the background being so dark on a fixed width page like this is kind of annoying, it's too dark for the content area, and really boxes the site in, I feel like a better balance can be found?

A take on the background issue (4th iteration): http://korpusdesign.dk/sitecrit/…
I think it works, though it doesn't comply with The People's™ wish for warmer colors. :)

The header looks much better.

I think you have too many colours. I liked the Blue Gradient in the first Nav (the lines under the links), I think I very limited pallette using that blue and a bright or rusty orange as an accent with Greys might work better. At the moment you have greys, blue, maroon, red and olive green.
If you want to grid this up a little more work on a nine column grid - 2 columns for logo and one each for the nav.
I'd keep the nine col grid and left align the footer as well to maintain the modern feel.

My initial idea was to keep the palette very simple: A blue base color and some derived shades of blue from that + a pink accent color.
However, as pointed out by people in the thread, it gave the design a kind of sterile feel, which I wasn't really able to get rid of within that palette.

use colour pics then, but the olive green and maroon really aren't working all that well for me. I'd rather sterile design and let the products shine, then something that is a mish mash of army green and blood :)

Easy now, I have a very fragile ego. ;)
I can definately see your point, and I guess it'll be a critical decision I'll have to take - chosing between the more sterile look or the, perhaps, more distracting palette. I'm going to throw some more content into the framework and see what works best in the end.

maybe a bit more verticle space? seems a little compact now. more space might add elegance. perhaps make the logo and title in the main space larger for a little contrast in proportions?
The page looks nice... this sort of thing is hard to say what should be done. It is all just degrees and preference.

it still doesn't feel very inspiring, it doesn't make me think "ooh aI want to see some of that", it's a little too... I dunno, intellectual looking and not selling enough.
- I think it's easily remedied by adding some product shots to lead into the site sectionsmax_prophet
- Showe me some nice gubbins!! that's what I'm there to see right?max_prophet
- Actually the site doesn't sell anything. It's a kind of showroom and background site about the shop.doctor
