I hope they will return in 2010 or 2011. They didn't rule out come back:

Sad news, then again the WRC is going down the pan, the TV coverage is shit. For most of the rally coverage there is a one hour programme which represent 3 bloody day. What the point.

WRC - World Rally Crisis;
Good point roundabout, one hour on Eurosport is not enough. This sport needs someone like Bernie in F1 (but not so greedy one).

That's really sad. It must be a business or political parting of the ways between Subaru and Prodrive though. Its possible that Subaru are planning to downspec their cars for improved price points and the nature of the WRC admissions would leave Prodrive with some substandard hardware.
Prodrive talk about returning in 2010 as an independent, and Subaru's are bought entirely on their rally heritage (unless you're a farmer) so I bet they too will be back, maybe with their own in-house development team.
I have to say I am quite excited to see what ProDrive bring as an independent. With the right car as a basis, they would be totally unbeatable.

The thing is that in 2010 WRC class will be abandoned, so according to the new regulations, new top cars should be based on S2000 class, and I think that Subaru doesn't have much time to build brand car based on S2000 regulations. They just launched this year new Impreza S14. Maybe they use "global downturn" as an excuse to withdraw.
