E-commerce Database Questions

I have a client that is looking to have an e-commerce site built. The site will need a database to handle about 600 products. Each product has item number, category, paper, size, price per 500, 1000, 2,500, 5,000, and 10,000 and then an image associated with it. Other than that it's a fairly typical commerce site with a shopping cart and purchase online functionality. All the products will be searchable by category.

I am primarily a graphic designer and web designer but I've never had the opportunity to build an e-commerce site before, does anyone have recommendations, likes or dislikes as to what back-end programming I should be looking for? ASP? PHP? or anything else? What do I look for in a programmer other than previous work? Any insider tips? What is a typical price range I can expect.

The company currently has their inventory database in Peachtree and I assume that this can be exported into another format for use on a site.

    Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

Scripting language is a matter of preference. Most here would likely recommend php (I would too) but there are others; dotnet, webobjects, etc, etc.
You'll likely want to go with an existing cart rather than building a new one from scratch. Use filter — there are about a million of discussions about e-com carts.
Depending on scale you may be looking for a team rather than a single dev-guy.
