So I'm doing a couple days of AS training, as it been a long time comin. Immersing my self in tutorials and the Lynda course and all that.
Question —
I assumed I'd just dive into AS3 as I work on CS3 and it only keeps moving forward. Should I back up and focus on AS2? Am I missing anything fundamental by starting training with AS3 and not having other background?

Trying to learn both AS2 and AS3 seems like a lot of work for a couple days. I would focus on AS3.
- The two days is kind of just the starting point. Need a chunk of time to get goin. Will spend way more time after that.harlequino

NO.
If you have no experience do not learn 2.0 first. That would be a SERIOUS waste of time and effort. Just get a good book for beginners for 3.0 and crush through it gradually. Then step up to the Colin Moock book and some Design Patterns books.
I'm currently about half-way through the ActionScript 3.0 Bible. I've got five AS3.0 books on my shelf, and it's been the easiest to read and learn through.
Also, the O'Reilly "Learning ActionScript 3.0" is a good starter book as well, but I found the AS3.0 Bible far more effective.

AS3 will force you setup and approach things correctly, whereas AS2 is still a bit of anything goes. I would go straight to AS3.

Thank you, sirs! Good to know. I am approaching this with some hesitancy, so I want to make sure I do it right, and don't waste and/or confuse myself. By the time I am half-way proficient at this there will be AS5 so I'll be fine I suppose.
AS3 it is.

Even though I've worked with Flash for a number of years now, I've always handed off any coding to someone else. So forgive noob questions.
Is it better to think of AS3 vs. AS2 as really differnt languages altogether, rather than 3 building upon 2?

The syntax has changed dramatically.
- For the better, of course.dMullins
- Got it, thanks.harlequino
