while I really admire a lot of these moderns sans that keep coming out, at the same time I find them a bit bloodless... I wonder if that's just because of familiarity

I think National is a lovely workhorse of a typeface, it's on my shortlist of fonts to buy in the next year or so. It has character but isn't too wonky. I agree that most of the others are rather bloodless as you say, Rand.

There was a font release about a year ago...was a custom built, really curvy type of outlined font...was called something like Metronome or Metro something. I don't even remember who designed it...anyone remember? Apparently it took years to develop.
