further (and not so positive) reading:

"There is no tricking iDVD. It is superb for what it does. What you want it to do is not within its capability. If you want the menus you'll need to break your video into segments for burning to multiple DVDs (or get DVD Studio Pro)."
Yeah... i'm pretty sure there's nothing I can do other than complete split up the DVD into several DVD's... uhg.. what a pain.
Thanks for the help though airey!

Yeah... all of these are basically saying the same thing. That iDVD works for files under 3hrs and will compress them appropriately.. but my problem still lies in that even though when i omit almost %90 of the content the dvd is still way too big and wont let me save it as a disc_image or video_ts files. It's just not a powerful DVD authoring product.. it's basically made for idiots.

Well to hell with it... i'm going to bed, thanks for your help though mang!

So there may be light at the end of the tunnel...
Apparently you can import dvd projects from iDVD into DVD Studio Pro (from Final Cut Studio) which gives you much better and controlled authoring options.
