i used to buy all of my pc hardware from http://www.mwave.com
asus motherboard
ati video or nvidia card
crucial memory (not sure if brand name memory is still a big deal)

I would go Intel. Go with the Quad Core Q6600. Pair that with a DFI LanParty board and OCZ memory is superior to anything else for RAM.

so i shouldn't go with the new chipset the intel i7?
- designbot0
It's not going to make that much of a difference honestly. Nforce chipset has been top-notch for a long time. But I haven't read up on the i7 chipset much either (sounds kind of gimmickey). Performance wise the chipset is going to be a very small consideration.

Intel Core i7 920 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pr…
CORSAIR 750W ATX12V - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pr…
BIOSTAR TpowerX58 LGA 1366 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pr…
ATI FireGL V3600 256MB - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pr…
CORSAIR 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pr…
That should get you most of the way there. Then just get a harddrive and whatever disk drives you need.
- soynutz70
really? so i should be looking more at the graphics card, and ram, than the processor?
- depends on what you want to do with max. modelling uses gpu, rendering uses proz, heavy particle jobs like RAM.********

my hardware guy told me that 32bit OSes support 4gig of ram max, so if you don´t run a 64bit version of windows or max that could free some funds from ram, processor/board in favor of gpu power. I don´t have a clue about hardware though, it´s what he told me.
- soynutz70
ya, im gonna go 64bit OS so i can jack up on the ram, ive got a few configuration recommendations here and there. tryin to get as many as i can so i can make an educated decision.

hey soy,
Yeah graphics card is very important. Be sure and spend a little extra. Probably the most over-looked piece of hardware. I would say the most important, though probably pretty equal to the processor. RAM would be the last thing of the three in order of importance.Having said that be sure and get a good processor as well. Your processor can actually be the bottle neck If it can't keep up with your video card....I have this issue right now.
- As long as you have enough RAM, the quality of RAM isn't as important as the other 2.designbot
- see thats the type of info that i need, thx, i've looke up some benchmarks for the new i7 chips and the low end i7 920 can be overclocked quite a bit and holds up pretty well against other chips.soynutz7
- is it quality of ram or quantity?soynutz7
- Quantity in comparison to the importance over the other 2 for sure. (save money on RAM, spend on cpu and gpu)designbot
- i gotcha, thanks for the advice, i'll let u know what i decide on.soynutz7
- Matching the RAM to the Motherboard is very important, get that balance right and will a powerful processor you're in the right direction, booya
- ...the right directionbooya
- soynutz70
damn it, should i just buy a frickin dell?
- booya0
Na, build it yourself. Then you know exactly what's in it :-)
Build it with less fans as possible too. you can build near silent power PCs with the right amount of heatsinks, last thing you want is a minture jet engine distracting you.- You can get near silent fans. Only problem is, they all claim to be silent, it took me a while to get some that really werekalkal

DO go with the i7 range - they're not gimmicks, they're the 'single most important Intel chip since the Pentium 4' (according to something I read a few weeks back).
Only drop down loads on a fancy GPU if you really want the most from your games (if that's the case, make sure you pay a few bucks extra and buy a sound card, to take off some of the load from your processor. My (limited) understanding is that you don't get the benefit of their use in 3D programs, unless you stump up the 500-1000% premium on Pro ranges like nVidia's 'Quadro'
Memory IS important - in a production environment, you want Best Processor you can afford, Most Ram you can afford (3gb of DD3 on an i7 motherboard - ideally 6gb) and best HD you can afford (quick boot drive (7,200rpm+), large secondary drive (500gb+)). Way down the list is the GPU (though, if you're like me, you'll pay an inordinate amount of attention to the GPU as you want to play games l;ate at night.. *ahem*)
Here's an exhaustive comparison between the current crop of Intel chips. The sweet spot is the i7 920, which is what I hope to get when I get around to upgrading (which will probably be when the i8 1020 comes out!)

awesome info Naim, thanks a lot. the more and more i research this, the more $$ i want to spend. sucks.

Dont buy ANY expensive electronics at the moment.
If you can, wait until the new year and watch the prices drop bigtime!

Building a PC is only a good idea if you have no hobbies and your time isn't actually worth anything

dude makes no sense,
it takes me more of less 2 hours to put together a pc and install the Os,
and I laugh when people in my office don't know how to force quit a program
sad- Agreed. Since I started building my own pc' sI would NEVER buy one off the shelf. Other than a laptop.section_014

2 hours to build a pc and install the OS... hmmm.. doubt that, including the installation itself would take generally at least an hour. Then you have your drivers, apps and everything.
- section_0140
Since you're doing 3d you're gonna need the best graphics card you can get. Depending on the size of the models, you might need 2 video cards. I love gigabyte motherboards too. Priced great and very solid.
- kalkal0
Personally, I'd get a ATI HD 4870x2
You get more performance for your money than the nVidia equivalent.
