When you played one in one basketball as a kid or whenever, why did people do the bounce to the defender and say "check" and they bounced the ball back to you before you tried to score?
Constantly puzzles me. Why not just start dribbling?

it's a courtesy. it means the ball is in play when they bounce it back to you. it's just a way of insuring that everyone is ready, the other team won't bounce it back until all their players are ready.
- yes.iCanHazQBN
- well, he IS talking about 1 on 1 actually...iCanHazQBN
- but yeah, it's just courtesy. sort of a "reset" of sorts. not much more than that.iCanHazQBN
- It's like how when the team that gets scored on has to in-bound it before starting back toward the other end.boobs

"The concept of a check is on a new possession, it is handed to the opponent to make sure that the opponent is ready and set to go, only then he/she gives the ball back."
- Jaline0
"Instead of throwing the ball inbounds to your teammate, you set up at the top of the key. When throwing it to your opponent they make sure their team is ready before throwing it back. It just makes more sense when playing half-court ball."
- wtf. i know you dont play ball. are you wiki-ing?iCanHazQBN
- you cant cheat like that and look everything up whenever someone has a question.iCanHazQBN
- you either know the answer or dont. you cant just wiki everything. i KNOW you dont play ball.iCanHazQBN
- you can be my cheerleader though.iCanHazQBN

this only happens during half court play.

what Jaline said - since you can't pass it in to yourself, you check it and say, "check"
if you don't - they can pull a sneak and SCORE ON YOU

what i also thought was cool when i used to play streetball was that the person who MADE the foul had to call it. If you get fouled and say something, nothing happens. it sort of promoted honesty on one end and not being a whiny pussy on the other end.
- I've never heard of anyone playing like this.doesnotexist
- seriously? we always used to play like that. although i did play with some pretty good players......iCanHazQBN
- .....that like faster games. the less fouls called, the faster the game is.. as far as flow & speed.iCanHazQBN
- industry standard way of playing. Call foulsMachuse

growing up with three brothers... i learned that 'checking the ball' meant hitting me in the nuts or knees... ...hard... ...with the basketball... to verify of course that i was ready to play
- hahaaaaaaaaa nice. i have minor experience with this as well. but i'm sure its worse with brothers.iCanHazQBN
