get a 24-70mm 2.8. it's expensive but really really good. 24-85 is discontinued so you have to look for a used.

The 24-70mm pretty much replaced 24-85mm. The 24-70mm has a nano coating and is an AF-S. It's just packed with more modern technology. The AF-S 24-70mm focuses so well and quiet compare to my AF 85mm 1.4 which is also amazing too.
From what I've heard, 24-70mm 2.8 is the best midrange zoom Nikon ever produced. From shooting about 2000 photos so far, I can totally agree. It's worth the investment.
