Does anybody own one of these? I was looking at getting one as an alternative to TV. What do think of these?

You need a tv to use apple tv.

friend of mine has one, won't play the movies in his itunes though. I've tried to find fixes for it, but I see a lot of people have problems with this that apple can't solve.

I would get the d-link model instead, does hd and plays a trillion other formats.

What does it actually do? I could never understand.

youd be better of just getting a low brow mac book , it comes with Front Row which is pretty much Apple TV , then just get a mini DVI cable to connect your book to your TV ,

get a slingbox!

does it have its own iTunes or you need to have to store files in your computer first?

I have an Apple TV and Boxee and it's a pretty sweet setup. Get Handbrake and Visual Hub to complete out your software set and you'll have a lot of movies and media to watch.

don't much about it but I've heard it's a ripoff

I planed to get a mini as a media center, home iTunes and files server and so on. How is Apple TV better for that?

I quite like my apple tv. Its pretty much my just my ipod in HD on my tv with a remote. My PS3 does pretty much the same thing but photos dont look as nice and my wife doesnt really know how to use it.

I have hacked my Apple TV. I can download any type of movie files and play on Apple TV. Not having have to rely on iTune content offering is great. I am quite happy with it.

as much as I hate microsoft...the ms media center box is supposedly the way to go.
