Wrap around label

I need to create a label that wraps around a paper cup. The cup is a cylinder, slightly tapered narrower at the bottom.
A square label won't wrap around and follow the bottom of the cup. Does anyone know how to work out the shape the label needs to be?

can you get a template from your printers

Contact the manufacturer? They've usually got templates.
Generally you supply the art flat and they apply an algorithm for the warp/wrap.

or tag direct on the cup, and cut out your label.

or you could use your brain

The cup is from a client who wants us to do mockups for a photo shoot. Our printers have no idea and no one knows who manufactured it.

Get a piece of paper, wrap it around the cup, sellotape it, then mark out with a pen how you want it to look (if you're getting something made up yourself, it needn't necessarily be just a straight line, eh?), unwrap, scan, clean.
Or, get an exacto knife, cut the cup, scan it.

I was thinking along those lines Naim but surely there must be some sort of equation to work this out. Might just have to bodge it
I can't cut up the cup as there is only one for the photo shoot.
- What Nairn describes is only for the label dimensions. You've still got to work out the warp for your artwork.pylon

take a label that fits, and scan it flat

Eesh, NEVER rely on mathematics! :)
Best DIY it for practical reasons, anyway - allowance for label thickness and whatever fixing-device you intend to employ (assuming you're not having them pre-glued, that is) and slack for ease of slipping-on.
Maybe it's just me, but this is the kind of thing I find quite fun, so turn off your computer, get onto the cutting matt and enjoy your crafty afternoon!

That crap Nairn.
What you ALL failed to point out is that it depends wholly on the degree of the cone represented by said cup.The question is not what template do you need, but primarily you need to ascertain what type of cup will be used.
The cup could be straight - but you presumed a cone, and made yourself extra work...

- Yeah - but you still the angle of the taper..., so I'm 75% spot-on.moth
- The cup is a cut off cone, hence my mentioning that it was tapered.weave

Anyway I'm going with the Nairn plan and going arts and crafts on it
