According to NORML's site, state laws in Illinois list the sale of 2.5 - 10g outside of a school zone to be misdemeanor, 1 year jail, $2,500 fine however for first conviction he's eligible for 24 month probation (no jail) and dismissal of charges once complete. its a good thing your friend's son wasnt caught doing what he did in NYC where we have a zero tolerance law which means any offence is equal and it doesnt matter what the amount was being sold, it could be 1 gram or a few pounds, its all the same...

Why are the cops there doing sting operations on 17 year old kids. Of course that comes back to distribution. Anything under and ounce should be a slap on the wrist for possession.
