so i never got commissioned, i'll be commissioning myself then. i have had this idea for a while and people are enthousiastic. it seems i can even get the finance in order.
now i want info, all related to bookdesign. i already studied quite a bit myself, but i could use more tips/tricks/warnings etc.
also about publishing as i will be partly doing that myself. ISBN registering, anyone knows this?

towards to the middle you need more free space on the right book site then on the left site. ;) for your grid :)

I'm going through this process right now as well.
I'm currently in the hunt for a publishing company to take on my book, because doing it on your own is not only difficult and expensive, but having a larger company protect you and your ideas is nice.
If no one bites (which I would be surprised) I'm going to do the first edition on my own and sell that.

This book is lovely and it gives some great inspiration for book design.

Don't forget to put the start at the front and the end at the back. Save the most shocking part for the very last page. Half way through your book people's minds will wander so it pays to have a dream sequence or something similar to change the pace and reinvigorate interest.
Pictures are a good idea in reference books and children's books but tend to feel a little tacky in adult literature fiction.
If you print your book in lemon juice the reader will assume it is completely blank until they warm the pages carefully over a naked flame. This is good for mystery and intrigue but bad for safety and ease of use.
My thoughts are with you and my heart beats passionately for your endeavour at this exciting time Janne.

yeah, i might share some copies if this turns out well.
i will first start with making general outlines, a short explanation of my plans and an estimate of costs for creating and printing. The funds I will try to get from a bookstore here (not a simple one, been rated the best in NL, and one org. rated this one the best in the world a few years back), they do everything really, also publishing. Others I am thinking of will be a local (recently compl. revamped) museum, who have a shared interest in the subject i chose. And the provincial govt.
it will be a lot of pictures, not much text as people don't have time for heaps of text these days, unless it was done by a terribly good writer.
generally i wish to do research on cloth/textures being used in our history (which is pretty rich and inspiring for what i have seen now), also i'd like to do a public request here to people for related info and samples. it'd be nice if a cd-r could be included with eps (and other formats?) with seamless samples of these textures.
a little bit of history will go with it. some old photos and a few spreads with textures being used in modern fashion or at least applied in refreshing ways.
this may take a long while and require a lot of effort,
yet the product must remain SIMPLE + ACCESSIBLE + AFFORDABLE.so: not too much content, not too much depth, not too much items..
yet it should become very attractive and contemporary.
as most of the books on such subjects are rather dull and remain unsold. and that's a shame for the promotion of cultural awareness here. which always seems to be a pretty hot item in this region.

yes, but first my own site. which will remain vormburo and feature quite some commercial drivel but i know it'd generate work here, NOT the tight selection of just a few items. i know for sure now.
vrmbr will become another site with different projects, self-initiated stuff and things that are generally not so commercial by nature, or just simply free work.
