I decided to go for the D80 but I've not bought it yet. Maybe today after work. You know how it is with a purchase like that... in your mind you KNOW you're going to get it at some point, but there's a hesitation to get it immediately. I would love to be able to afford the D90 but just can't swing it right now. D80 should be a great starter DSLR and I'm glad it can use older Nikon lenses, making low f-stop, low light lenses more in my price range than the 40 or 60.

I've got a D80, and it's lovely really miles ahead of the rest of the consumer SLR range from Nikon. My only complaint is the crap matrix metering otherwise it's great. The D90's video isn't that great and isn't worth buying just for that, although it is nice.
It really is all about the glass though, I was slightly displeased by the 18-135mm kit lens although it does the job. When I got my 50mm f1.4 & 18-200mm VR it really does show how good the D80 actually is.
One more thing, if you're looking to take IR shots don't get a D80, go for the D40 over the D60. The D80's mirror is lovely for getting rid of IR but that's not great when you want to use it otherwise.

Thanks for the tips. After learning the basics I'll be after a f1.8 or 1.4 lense for low light pictures. That's the main thing I'm after. Decided on the D80 since it works with way more lenses than the D40.
