Is it part of a web developer's responsibility to know actionscripting? Is wrong if I tell him he has to learn it?
- brandelec0
it's not wrong to tell him him learn it, but i think it's wrong to assume he should know it because he's a web developer
web developer / flash developer, 2 different things. many are both

not as standard I wouldn't say. depends what other languages he's working in, what he was hired for and what his job entails.

A good developer tends to specialize in only a couple languages/platforms. You can't expect one to know it all. Jack of all trades, master of none.

He hasn't been hired yet, but most likely will because of his work. Thing is he doesn't know actionscripting, but I want him to learn it because i'm not a coder. I'm about to call him, and I'm thinking of mentioning it.

then hire to do what he was good at, you know the work that impressed you.. and get an actionscripting resource..

Not expected (at least not yet), so definitely suggest it.

it's only a web-devs responsibility if he/she advertised that he/she knows actionscripting.
it's your responsibility to choose the right web-dev for the job. in the same way that if i needed php work done i'd find a php developer, not just any developer i could find.

It depends where you work. Generally, in an agency environment (in my exp.), not really - WD and Flash (CRD) are treated separately but both are expected to have some level of knowledge of one another's domains.
If this guy is good, I'm sure he won't have a problem wanting to learn it.

You probably want to mention it, and also ask if he wants to learn it. He might not.

if he works for u then u are well in your rights to ask im to learn it or provide the training to do so.
Actionscript is just a manifested version of javascript which every developer knows anyway, so its not like your asking the impossible.

No, he should not; 2 different things, despite the fact that actionscript is a programming language. If developer knows c/c++/c#/java or any other object oriented language, learning AS for him should be easy, but overall all flash related work is treated as design work.
However, in my opinion the flash designer should know AS, at least some basic functions. Without AS flash is quite poor (just like MS paint with some animation features); the whole power of flash/flash apis is in AS.

Depends on the company I have seen some ads for TV editors which include the following, Final cut pro, Avid, Flash, DVD Studio Pro, After effects, Motion, Photoshop, Illustrator, Encoding Software, Soundtrack Pro. Thats ten programs which they would like you to know. I know 7 of them inside out and three of them comfortably.

senior web developer = should know enough from most common languages of code.
Jr web developer = well.. that's the reason you are able to afford him right? the day he becomes senior he is going to be making twice the money you make..

for as far as my experience goes, most good flash devs know some web-dev stuff as wel .. but that doesn't work the other way around.

the last thing the world needs is another coder who knows actionscript.
only hire flash developers with some creative abilities, so you don't have to hold their fucking hand all day saying "no can you make it work and feel not shit please"
