I agree with sublocked.
Just because Kanye, Cher and the guy from the backstreet boys are using it on all their tracks, it doesn't mean is bad. (and that goes for talkbox as well)You are just not listening to the right music, that's all.
Let the sheeple enjoy their fad, soon it will be gone along with the shade glasses.

^^ the shit that they're abusing these days is only autotune. it's a quick/cheap way to achieve that effect, which is why its so widespread.
talkbox / vocoder actually take skill to play as you have to use an instrument at the same time, and the results can be wildly different depending on who is playing.
talkbox would be roger / zapp, pete frampton, etc
vocoder is like what you heard on tracks like "planet rock" and beastie boys "intergalactic"
autotune is a computer plugin that's set once and forget. that's what you hear kanye / tpain / lil wayne using.
the effect on that cher song was actually a piece called the "digitech talker" which was an external, stomp-box type effect.
......your studio 101 education for the day :)

I feel like vocode or autotune or however it is produced, was already played out sounding when the trend caught on in hip hop/ r n b.
But they feel to like it, so, go forward.

Its hit country music and reggae too
- Meeklo0
I'm sure that education wasn't for me, as I had the digitech talker back in 98, I had it for like 6 years brah. I never had a talkbox but at the time we were very inspired with zapp's music. and used to play pause rewind his tapes in order to practice his sound.
:)
- didn't know you did music too. links? but yeah it bugs me when people say "vocoder" when its autotune they're referencing.sublocked
- autotune is a software that emulates vocoder********
- I run the longest running live electronic music night in san diego man. ;)Meeklo
- @dskz actually that's false. autotune was originally made to correct pitch on vocals. it's not made to emulate a vocoder.sublocked
- so your saying wikipedia is wrong?
HAHA******** - yes, i am.sublocked
- Meeklo0
it might be overused now, but frankly I dont listen to lil wayne or britney spears, so they can use it all they want. who listens to radio anyways?
- ukit0
Good point, who listens to this shit. Who cares

For sublocked:
Auto-Tune is a proprietary audio processor created by Antares Audio Technologies which uses a phase vocoder to correct pitch in vocal and instrumental performances. It is used to disguise inaccuracies and mistakes, and has allowed many artists to produce more precisely tuned recordings.

@dskz exactly...it's WAY different than a traditional vocoder.
traditional vocoders let you blend two signals. like a keyboard and a vocal, to produce effects. autotune just allows you to change the pitch of one material. it doesn't blend the two.
the effect you hear so widely abused is autotune set on its most extreme settings, where you get that wacky pitch jump effect.
two VERY different things.
- when people reference a "vocoder" in a musical convo they're always referencing the way to blend 2 signals, not just correct pitchsublocked
