Is it any good? Seems more advanced than office but I could be wrong. I use google docs sometimes but could do with a desktop version for when no broadband connection. I have MS office and a trial of iwork and can't decide - what's your experience? PS I know there's another thread on this but for a different reason!

MS Suite is dominant. So if it is Excel and Word you need, it is a must. Otherwise if this is for yourself, you golden with iWork. Does some weird things at times, but pretty stable and solid.

if youre sending files to other people who use office, or working on files that were created in office from other people, i recommend sticking with office. For me, the only reason to use office is so that you don't have to 'troubleshoot' when you send a functionality document to someone and it 'doesnt look right'.

iwork can open .doc, .docx, .xls and so on, as well as export to those formats. It preserves updates/revisions/whatever-the-s... in both import and export.

hm, main reason is for making notices for students / timetables etc. May occasionally have to mail one but seldom. I have indesign and was wondering whether to use that but probably overkill!

When I open up any microsoft office app on my mac (esp Word) it eats up all my ram, and my whole machine slows down. They are the most bloated pieces of software ever. Start again from scratch microsoft. Stop adding onto 20 year old software. it's 2009 almost.

You have all the compatibility that you need with iworks. There are some minor things that are a bit frustrating, drop shadows not showing up etc.. These are pretty minor.
You do however have to export as a MS file type every time you want to send a document to someone, you start getting multiple versions of files and it tends to get confusing.
I really like using Keynotes rather than power point. It seems that you get get much better looking presentations in a whole lot less time. It is also pretty good for story boarding I find.
Number has a few little things that make it better than Excel like the option to drag and drop expressions, I find it really quick. I also like the fact you can size your table easily to it to fit a print area.
I think it is worth the money but keep MS close just in case.

If you're putting things together in word for clients (dont get pretentious on me, sometimes they request it), you're much better off just doing it up in the program that they're going to be using to begin with.

If you're dealing with PC people I would stick with office, There are enough bugs between reading office files on a mac vs a pc. ei some images in ppt show up as those damn black boxes when viewed on a PC.

Pages renders and prints type beautifully compared to Word, and theres no contest what so ever between Powerpoint and Keynote.People say you can make nice looking stuff in powerpoint but its bullshit, how can you make anything look nice with that shitty vector and font rendering
