I highly recommend his current retrospective at the Whitney. The prints in person are startling--reproduction doesn't do them justice

William Eggleston's Guide May 1976. It is now regarded as a significant date, since it marks the acceptance of color photography by the highest validating institution (MoMA). color was no longer 'vulgar' as Walker Evans had once claimed. It had become a legitimate mode of photographic expression, transcending its previous purely commercial application. At the time, the show was greeted with considerable controversy.
