I'm thinking about driving from LA to Mexico and possibly staying in Baha for a week with my girlfriend.
Has anyone done this before? Is Baha the place to stay? If not, any suggestions where else should I go?
If Baha is the place, where should my girlfriend and I stay?
Where is the most beautiful, least touristy place?
NOTE: Neither of us speak a word of spanish.

Spelling correction before I fail.
Baha = Baja

make sure you tell anyone you come across that you don't speak mexican. try and pronounce it 'meh-hi-can' like those adorable little tijunana toads on the old cartoon. maybe end each sentence with 'si signor'.

been to all the touristy spots in baja...rosarito, ensenada, cabo...so i can only comment on those.
if you're driving down from LA i'd say ensenada is the spot to hit. cabo is really nice, but too far, rosarito is waaaaay too touristy and partytown.
ensenada is about an hour drive from the border. nice beaches, good spots to hit for food, but not too far out in the cuts.
unless you speak spanish i wouldn't fuck with the "non touristy" spots.

i don't want to put a damper on your plans, but please make sure you are informed about the serious situation currently taking place in Tijuana and some parts of Mexico. not very safe right now, research. plus do you have to drive? or are you willing to fly? i would say flying is the safest right now.
- TJ sucks anyhow...i catch static down there from cholos just because i'm from northern ca...sublocked

Mexico is scary as hell right now.
Bush's stupidity has also affected Mexico big time. Crime rate has gone way way way up due to lack of jobs.
Don't remember going through something as nasty as the current situation there... maybe back in the late 80's early 90's with the whole Salinas de Gortari situation.

those crazy mexicans.

The U.S. State Department issued a travel alert late last month warning U.S. citizens to take precautions and to be aware of the "increasingly violent fight for control of narcotics trafficking routes," especially in the cities of Tijuana, Chihuahua and Ciudad Juarez.

Think of it this way...
If ya don't go over to Mexico and enrich us, you are a pussy.

A week is a long time. A couple days will give you a good sense of the culture, and by that time you'll be feeling kinda unpleasant inside and you'll want to go home. Drive right past TJ and don't act like a gringo - you'll be fine. And make sure your girl isn't hot.

I was staying with a buddy in SD for the weekend (who is half Mexican but looks totally white). Anyway, we decided it'd be a great idea to go to Puerto Nuevo for a $13 lobster lunch. He did the drive numerous times before with no problems. So we enter Mexico, all's good, until we get pulled over by the Federales. 2 guys in various colored camo, with 2 big machine guns. The told us we ran a stop sign. We didn't. Anyway, somehow we got off with a warning but I told that story to a lot of people who were in the same situation, and had to take a trip to the ATM to pay these guys off.
I've had great experiences in the touristy parts. I say stick to a city that airplanes fly in and out of and you should be ok.
