Tikal obviously - make sure you get a licence to stay in the park overnight when the tourists have been flung out
Take the bus from Tikal/Flores (overnight for some real fun) to Los Pocitos and get the boat to Livingstone (a beautiful coastal Carribbean town - but watch the open sewers that flow into the sea)
Antigua Guatemala was quite fun as i remember (unlike Guatemala City which was a shithole)
The mountain villages up by the mexican border are amazing (can't remember the names though...
Guatemala is just a great place to explore. I don't remember there being lots of sites to see, it was just a great place to be.
Stay clear of Panajachel on Lago de Atitlan - back then it was full of tourists and hippies - god only knows what it's like now.... get a boat to the other side where things are much quieter.

Don't buy weed there. You buy it, then the guy who sold it to you tells the cops you have some weed, then the cops come banging on your hotel room door at 2am yelling and screaming and demanding all your cash while scaring the living shit out of you. Truth.
- Why would you ever tell a dealer where you live?Dancer
- Didn't tell, they just showed up.sleepyfatso

Bring US Dollars, a knife and a gun, and that's just to protect you from the cops.

Shame the pound to dollar exchange is balls now, I'd have lived like a KING! Now it'd be the same as being in the LDN....

you must see tikal - going there w/out seeing it is pointless. i went in august and there were gigantic spiders all over the place. other than that it's an amazing place.

Tikal is awesome go to tikal for sure!! Panajachel is awesome (Lago Atitlan) Imagen a lake with 3 volcanoes surrounding it, in a beutifull tropical paradise... thats panajachel! Sure theres hippies... but hey.. its beautiful..
Antigua is very nice with lots of history and ancient places and some great places to eat. If you can get to the beach, check it out... black sand! volcanic sand that is.
Safety is an issue, i wouldnt take my Canon5DmkII if you know whata i mean. Stay lo-key blend in with the locals, dont stray into the bad parts of town, specially in the capital!!!
Whatver you do make sure you go to Tikal & Flores (both in peten)
Theres alot of mayan history in guatemala plenty to do and see... make sure to visit the messageboards here for more tips and info:

i stayed in Antigua a couple years back. we rented scooters and took off up some mountain - lots of fun! i would have enjoyed the whole thing more if i hadn't gotten into a huge fight with my girl, which ended in a breakup when we got back! ouch! haha
