The G5 would probably do better with Maya since it has a better graphics card. But it is nice to have Intel processor since the next OS and a some software is starting to serve Intel only.

Actually, the video card in the imac is significantly better than the card in the G5.
- TheTofuFactory0
Yeah TheFatBaron is right. The iMac technically has a better spec sheet with that video card.

I think the intel processor tips the balance. You'll probably get more mileage out of it however Maya and Final Cut on the iMac might be a bit harder to work with depending on the project.

well, we use the macbook pro 2.16Ghz, at the moment for final cut and maya. now, its more lighter maya stuff. like a interior of a room.

Go with the imac intel.
My G5 imac is starting to feel a little sluggish, still gets the job done with no problem.- how much RAM does it have?akrokdesign
- 2.5 gbsofakingbanned
- you should stuff it with 4gb, i think that would make a diffrence.akrokdesign
- Its maxed. :(sofakingbanned
- Don't get me wrong it still gets down. Just when I have tons of apps open and working hard it seems to slow down a bit.sofakingbanned
- i still think its the USER. lol. nah, i am kidding. well, the freaking metal box start at 2,799...aaaaah.akrokdesign

As long as you max out the ram in the iMac you'll be ok. If your doing AE at all you can also upgrade to the CS4 pack which uses more of the Graphical GPU unit to render rather than the processor.

I work with final cut and apple motion on my iMac... it works fine. Just be sure and bump up your RAM.
- SteveJobs0
your work won't require anything but sufficient memory - you can never have too much.
any software that uses hardware acceleratioin, however will benefit from the better video card, but usually it's only cutting edge games that need the beefier video cards.

I'm not 100% sure but with the new OS coming (Snow Leopard), we're going to see improved performance not only with intel processors but with Ram usage. Intel MacBook Pros are also showing support now for 6 gbs of memory (soon to be 8 gbs of memory) and pertaining to the ram usage, they are closely related.

iMac, definitely.

I just replaced my machine with a MacBook Pro, with 4gig memory, and dual 2.53 ghz. Running all the Adobe apps, plus After Effects, Final Cut, and Cinema 4D beautifully. Running it out to an external monitor is working great too.
- thats what I want. lucky.sofakingbanned
- lucky? shelled out 3k. :|harlequino

i think it sums up to, if you have a budget for 2k or under, the imac would be great choice.
thank you for all the great replies.
