Didn't find anything through filters, so...
I know it's a bit old, but I feel most designers needs a little reminder. Read it.

Just saw that Carbon-site in public choice, and that resize-script pissed me off..

All good points that no one really ever follows.

That's all a bunch of useless crap that are not solid facts.
First mistake in all of those rules is that the dude is generalizing.
Pretty stupid to call print design "making pretty pictures".
- I feel this comment reflects the serious need to educate the print designers that are polluting the interwebs..Lillebo
- Mine?
I'm educated in both print and web.VectorMasked - The fact that you call this useless crap makes me wonder where you got your diploma.Lillebo
- Useless due to the arrogance. The idiot makes it seem that 'he' knows and nobody else knows anything.VectorMasked
- Not to mention that he already 'looks' down on print. Funny thing there's more uneducated people in web than in print.VectorMasked
- +1 Vector, web dorks seem to know jack shit about design, just pixels and usability guidelines!uncle_helv
- Actually I don't trust web designers on regards to usability. Tons educated themselves in their basementsVectorMasked

As long as the work is good, then I don't let it bother me, that's my rule!
Web dorks!

i dnt see the problem everyone has got with the browser resize
its all part of the experience at the end of the day.id prefer a shit hot website to resize my browser and make my time worth while looking at it, than looking a fuckin shit website in a standard size browser

- ...and maybe close all my other apps, and change my screen resolution?ribit

Fact: The average web designer that posts shit on his blog loses his virginity at age 27.

Fact: The average educated print designer loses his virginity at age 11 in a threesome with a brunette and blonde girl and makes them cum.

All right, all right. Settle down all you hip print designers with sand in your vagina. Let's get this straight.
Designing and developing websites is more like designing and developing a car. It's all about the functionality and requirement set by technology. Pixel perfection is important for CSS-implementation, and to allow the site to be flexible for the content. And content is KING. The content dictates how the site should be designed and structured.
This means that the person who is designing a website, MUST have a pretty good understanding for the technological aspect of the development process. Most print designers does not.
A lot of designers also view javascript as a design-tool for making special effects and fancy crap. It's not. It's all about making the site more flexible and functional.
That said, I am pro fancy all-flash websites, but only where this needed: microsites or campaignsites etc. These sites functionality is more like a poster where the point is to entertain and capture the user.
- Hahahaha is that what you tell people, been a web monkey, is like designing cars!! hahahaha!uncle_helv
- I'm not implying the development process is equally challenging or complicated. It's about the focus.Lillebo
- he's completely correct helv and you are showing yourself up if you lack this understanding of this medium, its all the rage these days you knowkelpie
- ...these days you know ;)kelpie
- By that analogy, Toyota makes the greatest cars. Sorry, I still want a Ferrari. Sexy sells.formed
- You just completely missed the point.Lillebo

To quote one of the most respected interactive firms regarding their redesign:
"Our sites used to reach out, grab the user, shake them vigorously and scream, “Made by Fantasy Interactive!” Fi was notorious for developing everything and anything in Flash, Today in Fi, you will only find Flash in places it needs to be and fits. Looking back over the past nine years, the average website has matured substantially. Choosing the correct technology is imperative for a company’s goals. For example, Fi is looking forward to releasing some html and Ajax-based applications and portals this year, alongside boundary-pushing Flash-based Micro-sites."

That is one of the most badly written articles I have ever read.

Hey lillebo theres also a lot of web developers out there that believe in the 'content is king' maxim to the detriment of a sites design and thus is why there are so many shittily designed sites out in t'internet that adhere to css rules but look like crap and are difficult to navigate and interact with.
The problem is not just print designers ok, or just designers in general a lot of bad sites out there have just been built, not designed and yes, I think thats a fundimental difference.
- Hahaha was typing something similar as you posted!uncle_helv
- I could not agree more. That's why I said "most designers" in the initial post...Lillebo
- ...before you made an attack on all print designers!uncle_helv
- No, I made an attack on "print designers that are polluting the interwebs"..Lillebo
- uncle_helv0
Don't be so ignorant Lillebo, you think people who work with print no nothing about content, and technical constraints, a web site should have a balance of both functionality and aesthetics, instead of being dragged through the web standards manual and looking like a two bit blog!! It's no coincidence that all the so called web guru's webs sites look like a pile of guideline driven shite!!
- VectorMasked0
Dude!
You are saying stupid things. Honestly.
First if a print designer does a website, they do it because they have nobody else to do it for them (time, budget, etc...)
Go to an Agency, firm, etc... and the web dudes do the web stuff. The designers care about the aesthetics and work together as a team. But the web dudes do NOT eclipse the project as if they were usability experts, coz they aren't.Second, there are shitloads of web designers that call themselves web designer simply because they read some javascript, css, pearl , phph books over a period of 4 years at home and practiced.
This DOES NOT make them experts or WORST... experts in usability. Also, chill down a bit. The term web designer is so loose. Many of them have ZERO education, some have certificates and small diplomas. We should talk more when 4-year bachelor degree programs are offered as a standard in any College or University. This alone shows that you CAN'T just be an expert because you say so.

Some very good points in that article, but does he have to be such a cock about it?

webmasters?
this word still alive?

I achieved total mastery of the web some time ago. it does my bidding and mine alone

That article is just a load of bollocks.
The rules to every web project derive from the context of it.
As if we need more jihadists.

First of all; I agree. A typical 16 year old "web dude" is no more qualified to design or develop websites than a "print-only designer". And being able to write HTML does not make you a usibility expert.
I would require advanced knowledge of both HTML and CSS, in addition to having serious skills and proper education with graphic design and composition before I let someone design a website. Also it would be nice if they knew a little about the back-end magic (php, postgresql etc).
Your last point, however, is just as applicable to print designers as to web designers. To be a "designer" requires nothing, to be a successful one however..
