i don't know of any examples but i've used it before. for right justified menus.. but it's something i rarely use OR see.

I don't see it enough. I actually quite like it when used appropriately.

i think it can be done successfully using short passages - without a common place for your eye to return to at the beginning of each line, your readability is going to decrease

It's not something you *should* use, at least for body copy. It's okay when used for captions or notes in margins (see Bringhurst's book, it's used there).
