pro/express...I'm going to be doing pretty much basic stuff. simple alpha layering and fades. which should I go with?

I got express. I dont know anything about video but its easy to learn. Personally if your not doing major studio work go with express.

I would go express. The learning curve on Pro is pretty steep, so if you think you’re up to it...
I assume there is a pretty decent upgrade path, so you could learn the balls off Express and see how you feel about going to the next level.

Id go with the pro version b/c even if you only want to do the basic stuff now who knows what you may want to try next month. Also if you dont want to drop a grand+ plus on the pro version you can get fcp and other software (I got the adobe creative suite and Avid express and both worked fine) for dirt cheap at: www.warezstore.com

I've worked with pro, and after going through a step by step book that was 900+ pages I still feel like I could have probably donethe same with iMovie. Keep in mind I've never used iMovie but the outcome of the learning experience seemed pretty sub-par. A second thing to keep in mind is that I'm primarilly an interactive guy, so what the fuck do I know about video editing.

one of the big differences is the number of export formats so unless you're doing studio work you'll be able to do what you gotta do with Express.
