If I wanted a skateboard or some new-fangled [something]board with monsterous wheels that could roll over just about anything and insanely tight maneuverability..
...where would I look?

sounds like you're going to want a longer board and some all terrain skate wheels. check out Sector 9, they have a ton of great longboards... you're going to have to search around and possibly order your wheels online though since most skate shops don't usually carry them. otherwise you can just put some big soft longboard wheels on it if you're gonna stay on the street.
good luck, have fun.

I actually have a sector 9 longboard...
Trouble is.. I'm looking for small, compact board with giant wheels.. but not simply a custom build at a local skateshop. Something different.. I've seen shit like this:
But that's too cumbersome, ridiculous, and not suited for city-life. Something a bit more modest, but something that won't cause me to flip over when I roll over a haphazard human body obstacle.

I can't tell you what skateboard (although not a thin one), but I can tell you what wheels. I think they are called "pigs" : red and rubbery and perfect for choppy city streets. You can put them on a standard deck — so you don't quite have the oddity look of the above, but can still get anywhere.

takes those old style boards and if you want street skating take one with hard wheels

soft wheels are better for rolling over pebbles and such. find some 60mm with a 86 durometer or so and get a nice cruiser shape and you should be fine. i would avoid the board you posted above unless you never want to get laid ever again.

I bought a regular trick deck and threw some wide trucks on it along with some huge, soft long board wheels and the thing rolls great. It just took a couple of risers to make sure the board cleared the wheels. Its terrible for tricks but I have another deck for that. This was built solely to cruise around without having to carry a gigantic longboard across town.
If your local skate shop has a decent staff they'll help you get set up from start to finish. Just tell them what you want and explore the different options. I got mine for less than 150 and i only spent that much because i opted for a brand name board.
