Andy Warhol, except he isn't a one trick pony... but anyone would recognize his work. Although I understand the question, I think it's kind of tricky. Pollack did something no one had ever done before, Duchamp was a genius, Picasso could have produced anything he wanted. In today's times I'd say Shepard Fairey. If you had seen Banksy's recent "animal exhibits" you'd see he's actually starting to go beyond the stenciling/mural painting. And there was also blek le rat before him... Not sure if the Fairey comment is fair, but he has been doing the same thing for a long time.

chuck close has always been my fav, but his work has changed a bit over the years - perhaps due to his immobility :(

I see the "sellout" angle but I didnt really mean it that way... I understand what its like to struggle with creativity and feel like every one of your ideas is terrible, like you'll never produce something you are proud of. I am way way too self critical. So If I came up with even one idea that I thought was unique and creative and that people got behind I would be happy. Even if I spent the rest of my career working around that idea it wouldn't diminish the fact that I produced something original.

Just on the Jesus thing, I know this is probably going to open a really big can of worms, but Jesus wasn’t about “water into wine” – that was his biographers. Jesus had one philosophy – do unto others as you would have them do to you. The rest is just lining for someone else’s pocket, IMHO.
